"We are trying to come out with a strong policy that will ensure that there are only standard tankers on our roads. The Lagos Zonal Chairman of NUPENG, Mr Tokunbo Korodo, gave the assurance in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.
"A good tanker is an asset to the owner and the driver.
"When you drive a good tanker, you have less job to do; you will not be on the road as a result of mechanical fault or be an obstruction to traffic flow,’’ he said.
Korodo said that NUPENG was collaborating with some oil marketers to further enlighten tanker drivers and owners on the need for roadworthy tankers.
On a park for tankers in Lagos State, Korodo said that NUPENG was still negotiating with the state government for a parcel of land.
"The parking lot allocated to us at Orile-Igunmu has been reduced due to the road construction in that area," he said.
He told NAN that NUPENG was working with the Ogun State Government to establish a tanker park.
Korodo said that parks for tankers would eliminate their indiscriminate parking and reduce traffic congestion.
"The government has identified some concessioners to provide some packing lots for us at strategic areas. As soon as they are done, we will move in," he said.
NAN reports that the Lagos State Government has for long been fighting indiscriminate parking by tankers.
The government banned parking of tankers on bridges and highways, but the drivers often flout the order, claiming that they have no designated place to park.
