- The Department of Petroluem Resources (DPR), on Thursday raided some filling stations in Kaduna in a bid to detect those hoarding fuel amidst long queues in the city.
- New agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the DPR inspection team undertook random sampling of four filling stations.
"We are here to ensure that the fuel that is sold at the correct price and also to make sure that there is no reason for anybody to divert fuel," the director of DPR Mr George Osahon said.
"We know where every fuel goes, where the consignment is supposed to go and when it was delivered."
On fuel scarcity, the DPR boss said it was a result of panic buying.
"It is a chain reaction, because there have been this talk of the NNPC doing something wrong or may be there would be increase in the price of petroleum product or that Kerosine was not suppose to be deregulated; all manners of things like that, and people are worried."
He said the department would continue to inspect individual pumps at filling stations "to see whether it is delivering the right amount and any pump culpable will be sealed".
According to him, the DPR will soon instal electronic monitors which will enable them to appraise filling stations without having to go round on inspection.
"It is not okay for us to be going round like this; there is a technology for all this and it will be deployed at the right time.
"As long as operators of filling stations don't play any tricks things will work smoothly."
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that in one of the filling stations, the officials discovered that two trucks of fuel meant for the station had not been delivered.
Osahon promised to investigate the matter, warning that anyone caught involved in diverting the commodity would be punished.
