Aguero will miss Manchester City's Champions League clash with Barcelona, say Pellegrini

Africtv - Mail Summary...
  • Manuel Pellegrini believes Sergio Aguero will not be making a La Liga return any time soon, and has told Marca that the Argentina striker can win the Ballon d’Or at Manchester City.

Aguero, 25, joined City from Atletico Madrid for around 35 million pounds in the summer of 2011, scoring the last-gasp goal which won the Premier League title at the end of his debut season and becoming one the division’s most dangerous players.

The Argentina international remains highly rated in Spain, with Real Madrid president Florentino Perez a big fan, and regular rumours that Lionel Messi would like his compatriot and friend to join him at Barcelona.

However, Pellegrini insists that ‘Kun’ is going nowhere as he can keep improving as City's leader and soon challenge for the title of the world's best player.

“[Aguero] is one of best five players in the world, without a doubt,” the Chilean coach said. “He is already a finished player, but with unarguable potential to keep improving. He was always strong, but the English league has made him stronger. He is comfortable here, I do not believe he will return to Spain.

“Manchester City is a good place for our best players, for Kun, or for Yaya Toure. If he went to Real Madrid, it would not be Aguero’s team, it would be Cristiano Ronaldo’s. The same at Barca -- Messi’s team. This will be Aguero’s team. In the next two years, Kun will fight for the Ballon d’Or.”

Pellegrini, who coached Iker Casillas during their 2009-10 season together at Real Madrid, said the Spain captain’s current situation rotating with Diego Lopez for the goalkeeping spot at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu was ‘strange’, but denied he plans to take advantage by bringing him to Manchester this summer.

“Casillas’ situation is strange,” he continued. “He is a goalkeeper for any style of football [including English]. I do not want that to mean he has to play. With the problems I have at Manchester City, that is enough for me.”

The former Malaga boss did admit he tried to sign Isco last summer, although the young playmaker opted for a 30 million euro move to the Bernabeu instead.

“I would have liked a lot to sign Isco,” Pellegrini said. “It would have been very important for him. For different reasons he went to Real Madrid. I wish him all the luck in the world.”

Madrid centre-back Pepe had also been on City’s shopping list last summer, Pellegrini confirmed: “It would have made me happy to bring [Pepe] to Manchester City.
We tried, but did not manage to do it.
