NYSC promises corpers security

The Director General National Youth Service Corps, Brig.Gen. Johnson Olawumi, has pledged that adequate security will be provided for corps members across the country.

The DG said the corps would ensure that the well-being and safety of the corps members were not compromised in the course of serving the nation.

This was contained in a statement issued by the NYSC after Olawumi visited a corps member, Mr. Oluwagbenga Babatunde, who was involved in an auto accident at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital.

Babatunde and five other corps members were said to have been involved in the accident on their way to the orientation camp. While others reportedly sustained minor injuries, Babatunde had to undertake surgery for a fractured bone.

He said, “We will continue to do everything to keep corps members safe and secure and we will also continue to respond promptly to anyone of them who is in distress in any form.

“While the national service is important, the lives of corps members are much more important. In fact, it is only those who are safe, healthy and alive that can serve the country effectively. Corps members need to be alive, strong and healthy before they can contribute effectively to national unity and economic development in the country.

“I decided to come here personally to wish him a quick recovery, to show that the country places a lot of values on the security and the lives of these young people and to show that we appreciate the enormous sacrifice and contributions they are making for and to the country.”

The DG directed prompt payment of Babatunde’s hospital bills and promised to grant his redeployment request to allow for his full recuperation after surgery. The DG also personally gave financial support to the mother of the accident victim who had come from Ibadan to attend to his son.

The victim’s mother, Mrs. Babatunde, appreciated the DG for his gesture, saying she had thought her son would be abandoned at the hospital by the corps.

“After the accident, I thought I was on my own here at the hospital until the NYSC DG suddenly walked in and paid all the bills,” she said.
