Thousands of Ilaro indigenes, living outside Nigeria, are expected to return to the ancient town in Yewa Local Government Area area of Ogun State between November 15 to 22, to be part of the re-branded Oronna-Ilaro festival.
Joining them will be Ogun State governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun; Director General, Nigeria Tourism Development Corporation, NTDC, Mrs. Sally Mbanefo and business mogul, Alhaji Aliko Dangote. They are among top dignitaries expected at this year’s festival.
The week-long festival will have as chairman of grand finale, coming up on Saturday November 22, Sir Kessington Adebunkola Adebutu, chairman of Kessington Adebunkola Adebutu Foundation (KAAF).
According to the Chairman of the planning committee, Chief Kayode Odunaro, the over two decade annual cultural festival which was endorsed as a tourism festival on the nation’s tourism calendar by NTDC in 2012 is celebrated in honour of the legendary warrior, Oronna, as a unifying platform for the display of cultural practices of the Ilaro and Yewa people of Ogun State.
Among the regular activities highlighting the festival are road show/street carnival, tributes to Oronna and other deities, Egungun and Gelede Masquerade display, Sisi Ilaro cultural beauty pageant, Poosu Night in celebration of food tourism and the all white attire Onigba Aje ceremony.
Others are a three-day medical checkup, 50 kilometer race, Jumat and thanksgiving service as well as the grand finale where over 70 clubs and societies will pay homage to HRM Oba Kehinde Olugbenle, the Olu of Ilaro and paramount ruler of Yewaland.
