Labour ministry establishes anti-corruption unit

THE Federal Ministry of Labour and Productivity has inaugurated an anti-corruption monitoring unit aimed at a new social, economic and political order in support of the Federal Government’s anti corruption crusade.

Inaugurating the   Anti-Corruption and Transparency Monitoring Unit, ACTU, on behalf of the minister, the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Clement Illoh said: “The reconstitution of the Anti-Corruption and Transparency Unit
has become necessary in order to refocus the Unit and to strengthen its membership to effectively carry out the war against corruption both within the Ministry and its Parastatals.”

Dr. Illoh explained that the Anti-Corruption Unit was mandated to monitor all financial transaction with a view to ensuring that all such transactions are carried out in strict compliance with extant government rules and regulations as well as draw the attention of the Minister to any identified case(s) of intention or collusion to defraud government.

It is also to recommend any other measure which the committee believed could generally ensure probity and transparency in the nation’s labour sector.   For emphasis, Dr. Clement Illoh emphasised the determination of the present administration of President Goodluck Jonathan, in tackling the menace of corruption by providing the required legal frame work of Anti-Corruption Act of 2001 to combat corruption at all levels of our society with the aim of bringing about a new social, economic and political order.

In her response, the Chairman of Anti-Corruption and Transparency Unit (ACTU) of the Federal Ministry of Labour and Productivity, Mrs. Hata Caroline, stated that the inauguration marked the beginning of the Anti-Corruption drive of the Ministry

According to her, “Mr. President is not relenting in his efforts because he sees corruption as a virus that threatens the fabrics of our society and endangers the present and future generation, it must therefore be the concern of every individual, home, institution, Ministries, Agencies and Extra-Ministerial Departments.

The ministry’s deputy director press, Mr. Samuel Olowokere said the newly inaugurated Anti-Corruption Unit has seven members drawn from various departments in the Ministry.
