NaijaCrisis: shi'ites dares FG as they embark on another Violent Protest
The Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), popularly known as Shi’ites have vowed to continue with their violent protest until their leader is.......
released.
Their threat followed a deadly attack on National Assembly complex Tuesday, July 9, 2019, where cars were set on fire and some security operatives and members of the group were wounded.
The invasion of the National Assembly forced the House of Representatives to adjourn sitting. The lawmakers are expected to resume today and the attack by the Shi’ites is expected to dominate deliberations.
The sect members have been protesting and demanding the release of their leader, Ibrahim Zakzaky, who had been detained since December 2015 following a clash with the convoy of the Chief of Army Staff.
It was gathered that members of the group went violent after they allegedly overpowered the policemen at the gate of the National Assembly, hijacked one gun and reportedly shot the two security operatives.
There were also reports that some members of the sect were shot and seriously injured as they attempted to harass other commuters.
They forced their way through the main entrance which is known as MOPOL gate and vandalised the gatehouse and burnt vehicles.
They became more violent when tear-gas canisters were thrown to disperse them.
