Urhobo Progress Union, UPU, has condemned the alleged destruction of 300 motorcycles, otherwise known as Okada, by Delta State government in Sapele and urged that the owners be compensated.
Commissioner for Transport, Mr. Benson Ibakpa, had said that the motorcycles were burnt because the owners violated the ban on Okada in some towns in the state.
However, UPU in a statement by acting President General, Chief Joseph Omene, at Mosogar, said: “The attention of Urhobo Progress Union has been drawn to the act of the Commissioner for Transport, Mr. Ben Ibakpa, wherein, in purporting to carry out the directive of Delta State against the ban of the use of motorcycles for commercial transportation in Sapele, decided to seize and destroy about 300 motorcycles from their owner.
“We are of the view that anybody going contrary to the directive of the state government ought to have been prosecuted through the law enforcement agency.”
Ibakpa said the ban was part of government’s efforts to rid the state of crimes perpetrated with motorcycles as tools.
