Amaechi faults Jonathan’s transformation agenda

Governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi, has criticised the transformation agenda of President Goodluck Jonathan, saying the programme has no positive impact on the lives of Nigerians.

Amaechi said this on Wednesday while inaugurating the ultra modern Pharmacology/Biochemistry building of the Medical School in Ekiti State University, Ado Ekiti.

The governor said there was pervasive poverty in the land due to the inability of state governments to meet some of its statutory obligations to the Nigerian citizens.

Amaechi, who commended his counterpart in Ekiti, Governor Kayode Fayemi and the management of EKSU for prudent management of resources, urged Jonathan to remodel his transformation agenda to meet the yearnings of the people.

He said, “This transformation agenda has not in any way reflected in the lives of Nigerians. Go everywhere, there is poverty and wanton neglect. So what are we now transforming?

“Some of the members of TAN are those that benefitted under the subsidy fund and who ought to be prosecuted and jailed. But I am sure that the All Progressives Party as a party will bring to bear more pragmatic agenda that would meet their yearnings”.

Fayemi, who expressed delight at the development in the university, said he had described EKSU a glorified secondary school during the inception of his government.

He said the trend had taken a dramatic turn through well-envisioned policy of his government and management of the institution.

The governor, who also commissioned the General Hospitals in Ikole, Otun and Ifaki Ekiti as part of the programmes to commemorate his fourth year anniversary, promised to fulfil his pledge to teach at the newly-proposed Institute of Peace and Reconciliation of the University to demonstrate his love for intellect and the development of the state.

Fayemi said, “I have never regretted my commitment to intellect because of the fact that some people are desecrating the sector, saying that that is not what they are going to eat.

“I have always believed that we have to lay a solid foundation for the coming generations to ensure that we have areas where we can make research about issues to bring about the needed development that would sustain other sectors of our economy.

“I had once referred to this university as a glorified secondary school when I came on board, but today, if you drive round, you won’t have the gut to say such because of our commitment and several strides we have made to improve the academic delivery here in EKSU.

“Last year, a student of this school emerged the best at Law school while some of them will be going to China in a couple of weeks to represent Nigeria in Enactus international game, having won the national laurel in this category. This is a plus and manifestations of what we have been able to do within four years.”
