DISCO staff, 19 others nabbed over stolen cables

AS Nigerians lament erratic power supply across the country, Oyo State Police Command has arrested 20 suspects, including a staff of Ibadan Electricity Distribution Centre, IBDEC, Mr. Olanrewaju Isaiah, for selling stolen cables and other electrical materials at Salvation Road, Oke Padre, Ibadan.

The command also recovered from rustlers 17 goats, stolen in Ogbomosho and Oyo towns in the state.

Although the IBDEC staff claimed it was his first time of selling the company’s property, there were indications that he had been vandalizing same for some time.

The Commissioner of Police, Mr. Kola Shodipo, said of the arrest: “On October 6, the patrol team attached to Ile-Ido division, while on visibility patrol at Akinbiyi village, along Ido-Eruwa Road, intercepted a Passat saloon car with number plate AV 577 KWL, conveying some cables and other electrical appliances.

“When the driver of the said vehicle, one Amaechi Obi of Salvation Army, Oke Padre, Ibadan, was questioned about the items, he claimed to have bought them from a contractor.

“When the contractor was picked, they confessed to have stolen the cables from Eruwa.”

On what pushed him into selling the company’s cables and other property, the suspect, who said he was a worker on contract, confessed that he actually stole the cables with the intention of selling them to his customer at Salvation Army.

The command also recovered 17 goats from goat rustlers and 41 exotic cars stolen at gunpoints in different parts of the state within the last three weeks.

One of the suspected goat rustlers, Mr. Tunde Kazeem, said he and his gang members usually stole goats in Ogbomoso and Oyo towns, adding that they would take the stolen goats to Mile 12 in Lagos State for sale to Asun (roasted goat) merchants.
