The Head of Department of the Primary Healthcare Unit of the council, Malam Mu’azu Muhammed, announced this during a visit by Journalists Against Polio at the local government secretariat. He said the workers allegedly denied five children the right to access the programme by failing to carry out the exercise in some sections of the area.
Muhammed said that the workers included five supervisors and 18 vaccinators deployed to Hotoro North but allegedly failed to discharge their routine responsibilities accordingly.
He said the workers failed to visit some houses for the exercise and did not report to the focal person about the situation until a team of senior inspectors discovered the anomaly during verification and random sampling.
Muhammed attributed the recurrence of the Wild Polio Virus type 1 in the area to the resistance of a mother of twins who did not agreed to have the children immunized.
He said, to prevent future recurrence, the local government and some key stakeholders had mapped out strategies to intensify awareness campaigns and ensure thorough monitoring of the vaccinators.
He said anyone found guilty of manipulation during the final round currently taking place in the area would be sanctioned.
NAN reports that the local government is targeting 310,877 children from the age of newborn to five to be immunised against polio during the round.
