Amaechi said his administration had been revamping federal roads in the state without getting any amount back from Federal Government as refund. The governor, who spoke at the Port Harcourt Centenary Awards on Saturday night at Government House, explained that he had informed President Goodluck Jonathan about a refund.
Amaechi, who disclosed that the President promised to pay back the money to the state government, expressed regret that the state had not benefitted from current administration at the centre.
He said, “Show me one new thing to indicate that Rivers people have benefitted from the 2.1 million votes given to President Jonathan in the 2011 elections I was voted into office to defend the interests of Rivers people and I will continue to defend the interests of Rivers people.
“We, on our own, have fixed federal roads up to N105bn; not up to one kobo has been refunded to us. Port Harcourt-Owerri Road, we have fixed it for N46bn while the Eleme junction inter-change was done about N7bn.
“The inter-change at Obiri-Ikwerre, Ada-George is a federal road, we fixed it; it is remaining the one heading to the airport. Mile One-Mile Three is a federal road; the flyover on that road, we have fixed it. The President promised that he will refund. I told him to refund me so that I can use the money to complete other projects.”
Amaechi, however, promised to mobilize and lead Rivers people to vote any eligible Nigerian that would serve the interest of the people of the state as President in 2015.
He also expressed dissatisfaction with loss of oil wells to neighbouring states, including Abia and Bayelsa states, even as he appealed to the Federal Government to refund over N105bn his administration spent on rehabilitating federal roads.
