Minister of Police Affairs, Mr. Jelili Adesiyan, has directed the Inspector of General of Police, Mr. Suleiman Abba to arrest and prosecute any politician who makes any inciting statement aimed at undermining the corporate existence of the nation.
Speaking, yesterday, in Lagos at the launch of a book Watch the watcher: ‘A book of remembrance of the Obasanjo years,’ authored by Yinka Odumakin, the minister said that members of the opposition were employing propaganda to bully the government of President Goodluck Jonathan, adding that the different gang-ups in the country were aimed at seizing power by all means.
He said: “I am sorry to say that those disturbing the peace of Nigeria today are former PDP members. These are people that were once ministers,’ governors and those who had served their terms and are no longer useful in the PDP.
“They now thought they could gang up again and form a political party and that is why they are saying that even if they don’t win, they will form a parallel government, which is very mutinous.
“I have started talking with the Inspector General and the Department of State Service, DSS, that anybody who makes any inciting statement must be dealt with. This country belongs to all of us, and if anyone says anything mutinous, such a person will be arrested and prosecuted, no matter how highly placed the person is.
“By the grace of God, I am the Minister of Police Affairs in this country today, and I have said and I am warning that anybody who makes inflammatory statement, who said anything that is mutinous, will be arrested and prosecuted.
“They should stop the drum of war, anybody who calls for unholy revolution, will be consumed by that revolution. Nigeria belongs to all of us. There is nobody that is untouchable, they might have done it in the past and got away with it, but let them do it now. Anybody who does it now, no matter how highly placed will be arrested and prosecuted.
“Nigerians have seen and heard what they are saying, they are only trying to make up propaganda to cow the government and nobody can do it. They have been in government before, they had seized power in an unholy fashion before, they have been ‘couped’ out with their own coup before, and they have done what they wanted to do, I don’t know what else they want and why they would start ganging up and say that they want to capture power on behalf of the people, who power already belongs to,” he said.
Asked whether the directive won’t suggest a clampdown on the opposition, Adesiyan, said: “That is why the opposition party must keep shut and watch their utterances. In a gathering where you say people should go to the polling centres with charms, cutlasses, guns and the rest, it is mutinous.
“Are you a leader because you are telling your followers to go and make people cry, wives widow, children fatherless. All sorts of inciting statements should not be condoned. So, whoever says it henceforth will pay for it, I repeat, whoever! This country is established by law and the law must take its course.”
