Hit-and-run driver kills bank worker

A bank worker, Segun Ajisebutu, has been crushed to death by a hit-and-run driver at the Palmgroove bus stop end of the Ikorodu Road, Lagos State.

Our correspondent gathered that the incident coincided with another one in the area. Eyewitnesses said the victim died in the confusion that greeted the two incidents.

It was learnt that earlier, a patrol vehicle attached to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, had chased a car on the expressway.

Africtv24 gathered that the car driver had broken the state traffic law by taking the BRT lane.

It was learnt that other vehicles on the road tried to avoid a crash with the offending driver.

The victim was said to have been crushed to death by one of the vehicles trying to avoid a crash. The hit-and-run driver was said to have immediately fled the scene.

An eyewitness, who identified himself as Puff, said the incident happened around 7am.

He said, “A car was being pursued by some LASTMA officials for breaking the traffic law. Other drivers began to manoeuvre and there was confusion on the road.

“The man was about to cross when he was hit by a different vehicle. He died there. ”

A police source, who passed the area at the time of the incident, told our correspondent the corpse of the victim was laid on the BRT lane.

She said, “The man was crushed by the car. There was a gash on his chest which ran down his body. It was a gory sight. I saw a crowd of people around him. I just peeped and quickly left the place”

Our correspondent was told that after some time, family members of the victim showed up, accompanied by some policemen from the Ilupeju Division.

An official of LASTMA, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said no LASTMA official was involved in the incident.

He said, “The incident happened very early and our boys posted to the area were not involved. But I gathered he was a worker in one of the banks in Palmgroove.

“I am also aware that some of his family members came around with some policemen from the Ilupeju division to take his corpse away.”

The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Babatunde Edu, did not pick his calls or reply to a text message sent to him as of the time of filing this report.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Kenneth Nwosu, confirmed the incident.

He said, “It happened around 6.30am. The corpse was evacuated by the Ilupeju division.”

LASTMA PRO, Mahmud Hassan, denied that the agency was involved in the death of the victim.

He said, “Our investigation revealed that the man collapsed and died. The family and two policemen went there and removed his corpse. The incident had nothing to do with LASTMA.”
