The All Progressives Congress, APC, has accused the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, and the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, of being behind the ”illegal registration of voters exercise now going on in Nasarawa State.
State Chairman of APC, Mr. Phillip Chekwo made the allegation at a news conference in Lafia, the state capital yesterday.
Chekwo spoke following the arrest of some persons with fake INEC registration gadgets in the state recently, adding that both INEC, PDP and the police were working together over the issue.
Addressing news men at the NUJ press center in Lafia, the state chairman of the APC said
Chekwo said, “it was discovered that some enemies of democracy have embarked on illegal voters registration exercise using INEC staff and equipment. The APC does not doubt the credibility of security agencies; we however caution that any attempt at cover up in any form shall be resisted.
We gathered that a members of the state House of Assembly (names withheld) was sighted at the divisional police station, Akwanga, from where he took an unnamed seniour police officer in his car to his residence.
“We received information that some people were engaged in the illegal registration and we were able to recover the items including print scanners”.
“We are watching with keen interest for the commission to take the necessary action by investigating possible internal collaboration by some of its unscrupulous staff.”
The APC leadership also alleged that voters in the state were yet to be issued with their permanent voters cards by INEC.
It further said that software gadgets used for illegal voter registration exercise were recovered at Gudi Community in Akwanga Local Government Area of the state.
Reacting to the allegation, the state Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Ismaila Numan, confirmed that the command ‘’recovered finger print machines and some booklets.’’
Numan, however, said that no arrests had been made, even as reliable sources told Vanguard that ‘’one of the culprits was apprehended by youths in the area and handed over to the police at Gudi police outpost.’’
The sources said that the suspects were caught with a laptop, web camera, and finger print machines while carrying out an illegal voters’ registration exercise at Angwan Waya, in Gudi area of Akwanga Local Government.
