Two of 462 Internally Displaced persons, IDPs, at the residence of Senator Ahmed Zannah and eight others at Alhaji Komi Damboa’s house were, yesterday, reported dead, following an outbreak of cholera.
Over 30 victims of the disease, which struck the IDPs, were also hospitalised at Chest Hospital in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.
It would be recalled that since the capture of Bama, Gwoza, Damboa and other communities in Borno State by Boko Haram, over 56,000 people are now taking refuge at different camps established by the state government.
Several other IDPs from Bama and Damboa chose to settle at the senator’s house located adjacent to Indimi central mosque, along Damboa road and Alhaji Komi Damboa’s residence in Gomari Airport area of Maiduguri metropolis.
Senator Zannah, who represents Bornu Central senatorial district, has been one of the influential agitators for the withdrawal of the military from Borno, alleging that “the military presence on the nooks and crannies of Borno has contributed to the increasing killings and destruction of property by insurgents.”
Afric TV gathered from a reliable source that two of the IDPs, who died as a result of the epidemic were those from Bama Council Area, while eight others died at Damboa’s house during the Eid-el Kabir Sallah day, as they were trapped due to the curfew and restriction of vehicular movement imposed by security operatives.
The source added that over 30 IDPs, who contracted the disease, had been admitted at Chest Hospital, Maiduguri, for treatment, while the two affected camps and the hospital had been fumigated.
In the same vein, drugs and table water have also been provided by Emergency Response Team of the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, in the North-East zone in the state.
Responding to the development, North-East Zonal Coordinator of NEMA, Alhaji Mohammed Kanar, said he had directed the Emergency Response Team, which include the army, civil defence corps, red cross, customs, state fire service and other critical stakeholders, to visit the two affected houses and the hospital where the affected persons were admitted on Monday to provide them with drugs to checkmate the menace.
According to him, those at the house of Alhaji Komi Damboa will be visited today.
