Ex-militants chase away APC senatorial campaign team in Delta

Reformed militants in Delta State, led by “General” Goddey Smith, aka Bounanawei, King of the Forest, have barred the All Progressives Congress, APC, from campaigning in the riverine Burutu Local Government Area of the state.

Vanguard learned that the former militants chased away a senatorial candidate of the party, Mr. Temisan Omatseye, from the area on Monday.

“No party other than the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, is allowed to campaign in the locality,” the ex-militants were quoted as saying.

Obasanjo endorses Buhari, warns against coup

After months of berating the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan, former President Olusegun Obasanjo has declared his support for the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.).
Obasanjo, who is a member of the Peoples Democratic Party, made his opinion known during an interview with the Financial Times at the launch of his controversial autobiography titled, ‘My Watch’, in Nairobi, Kenya.

Boko Haram: Niger to deploy troops in Nigeria

No fewer than 750 troops from the Niger Republic are to be deployed in the North-East   to assist in the ongoing efforts to end Boko Haram activities in the zone.

The Nigerien parliament approved the deployment on Monday night just as the United Nations assured Nigeria that it   was firmly behind it in the fight against Boko Haram.

Nigerians warn Jonathan, military against media clampdown

Nigeians on Tuesday reacted angrily to speculations that the President Goodluck Jonathan administration was planning a major clampdown on media houses considered to be “unfriendly”. 
Prof. Itse Sagay, SAN, a constitutional lawyer; Mr. Yusuf Ali, another SAN; Mr. Debo Adeniran, an activist leader of the Coalition Against Corrupt Leaders, and others who spoke to our correspondents said the alleged plan to clamp down on the media was symbolic of a government desperate to hold on to power by all means.

I won’t go on terminal leave says Jega

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Attahiru Jega, has said he does not have any plan to embark on terminal leave.

This was contrary to unsubstantiated report that Jega would proceed on a forced terminal leave on March 1.

But Jega’s Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Kayode Idowu, denied this saying his boss was busy preparing for the conduct of the elections.

Boko Haram attack Chad troops in Nigerian border town – military

Militants from the Boko Haram Islamist movement attacked Chadian troops stationed in a Nigerian border town before dawn on Wednesday before being repulsed, a Chadian military source said.

“The Boko Haram elements wanted to surprise us by attacking at about 4 am (0300 GMT). We were aware about it from the day before and were prepared,” the military source told AFP.

Fuel subsidy rises to N14.79/litre, as oil price rebounds

Following slight rebound in the prices of crude oil in the international market, the amount Federal Government is paying as subsidy for Premium Motor Spirit, also known as petrol, rose to N14.79 per litre, yesterday.

This is due to the fact that the Expected Open Market Price of petrol, yesterday, rose to N101.79 per litre, according to data obtained from the Petroleum Products Pricing and Regulatory Agency, PPPRA.

Presidency debunks rumours of Jega’s removal

The Presidency has debunked rumours gaining ground in some online and social media that the Chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Professor Attahiru Jega, had been sacked by the Federal Government.
A source from the office of the National Security Adviser, NSA, citing security concerns yesterday, warned politicians against spreading falsehood capable of inciting violence to desist from doing so.

PDP to INEC: Allow use of TVCs for voting

General,Peoples Democratic Party, PDP Presidential Campaign Organisation, PDPPCO, Dr. Ahmadu Ali, has asked the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC to allow the electorate, who participated in the 2011 elections, use their temporary voters’ cards in case they could not get their permanent voters cards.

Ali said there is need to allow voters use TVCs against the backdrop that the commission was introducing a new methodology in the entire process.

He said INEC was not prepared for the election, adding that the problems were monumental and would have made the commission fail monumentally.

Fake pastor in police net over alleged N10m fraud

A fake pastor, identified as Chibuzor Nnaegbo, is currently cooling off in one of the cells of Lagos State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, Yaba, for allegedly defrauding four businessmen in Lagos.

Afric Tv gathered that Pastor Chibuzor claimed to be in Israel while defrauding the victims. He reportedly used a coded MTN number to call his victim pretending to be in Israel. Among his victims is one Nzeh Remigius and three others.

JTF discovers cache of arms, ammunition

The Joint Task Force, JTF, codenamed Operation Pulo Shield, has recovered arms and ammunition from pirates that attacked its troops on January 8.

It also arrested two suspected illegal bunkerers, rescued kidnapped victim and destroyed several illegal refineries and implements.

This was contained in a statement by Lt Col Ado Isa, Coordinator, Joint Media Campaign Centre.

Lawyers ask court to restrain Tambuwal from parading self as speaker

Two lawyers have asked a Federal High Court sitting in Lagos, to restrain the Speaker of House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, from further parading himself as speaker.
Anthony Nwajiugo and Okechukwu Ebirim, plaintiffs in the suit are contending that having defected from the party upon which he was elected into the House, Tambuwal “cannot remain and has, by his action, lost the competence to remain the Speaker.”

Deadline for PVCs collection now March 8

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has further extended the deadline for collection of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) until March 8, 2015.

In a statement, yesterday, by the Secretary to the Commission, Mrs Augusta Ogakwu,  said the four weeks extension of the deadline followed the rescheduling of the 2015 general elections.

She stated that “the collection of the cards will continue for four more weeks until March 8, 2015.

Buhari asks court to dismiss suits seeking to disqualify him

The Presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd), yesterday, queried the competence of two separate suits seeking to disqualify him from contesting against President Goodluck Jonathan on March 28.
The suits that came up for mention yesterday were the ones that were lodged against the APC presidential candidate by two plaintiffs, Mr. Chukwunweike Okafor and Mr. Max Ozoaka, who were both represented in court by their lawyers.

US ‘deeply disappointed’ by jailing of Malaysia’s Anwar

The United States said Tuesday it was “deeply disappointed and concerned” over the decision by Malaysia’s highest court to send opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim to jail for five years on a politically charged sodomy conviction.

“The United States is deeply disappointed and concerned by the rejection of Anwar Ibrahim’s final appeal and his conviction,” the US embassy in Kuala Lumpur said in a statement.

Real Reason For Shift In Dates Is Poor Preparation, Not Insecurity says Presidency

17 Die In Ilesa-Ife Road Crash

No fewer than 17 persons have reportedly lost their lives in an auto crash that occurred along the Ilesa-Ife expressway, about 18km from RCC.

According to the Facebook account of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), two other people sustained various degrees of injuries in the auto crash that occurred around 4.00pm.

Boko Haram leader vows to defeat regional force in new video

Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau vowed in a new video released on Monday that the group would defeat a regional force fighting the extremists in Nigeria's far northeast, Niger and Cameroon.
 "Your alliance will not achieve anything. Amass all your weapons and face us. We welcome you," he said in a 28-minute speech, one of three videos posted by the Islamists on YouTube.

Troops from Nigeria have been backed by soldiers from Chad, Cameroon and Niger in recent weeks because of increased concerns about Boko Haram's threat to regional security.

Boko Haram attacks Niger prison before vote

Islamist fighters from Nigeria's Boko Haram sect attacked a prison in neighbouring Niger overnight, hours before Niger's parliament was due to vote on joining a regional offensive against the militants, witnesses said.
 Heavy gunfire rang out as Niger's army repelled the attack, Boko Haram's third assault on the border town of Diffa in four days, residents and military sources told Reuters.

UN urges more regional military coordination against Boko Haram

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - The United Nations Security Council urged West and Central African countries on Thursday to improve regional military coordination to more effectively combat Boko Haram militants in northern Nigeria.
Boko Haram has become the main security threat facing Nigeria, Africa's biggest economy and top oil producer, and increasingly threatens neighboring countries.

The African Union (AU) has authorized a force of 7,500 troops from Nigeria, Chad, Cameroon, Niger and Benin to fight the Islamist militants.

Woman allegedly stabs husband to death in Bayelsa

A 28-year-old woman has allegedly stabbed her husband to death at Akenfa, a suburb in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State capital, following a disagreement.

The deceased, identified as Henry Gagariga, a legal practitioner, was said to be in his early 30s. The incident occurred at the couple’s residence along Ebisam Road, Akenfa.

The woman, whose name was given as Victoria, according to a security source, is currently being detained at the State Criminal Investigation Department, CID.

Failed kidnap attempt: Gunmen kill man in Bauchi

Tradegy struck, yesterday, as gunmen killed a senior civil servant at a mosque in new G.R.A, Bauchi State.
It was learned that the suspect, known as Babangida Garba, a staff of the Ministry of Local Government Affairs, was killed by the gunmen while, resisting their kidnap attempt.

An eyewitness said the gunmen tried to force Babangida into their vehicle, but he struggled with them.
