The Independent National Electoral Commission on Sunday extended the Continuous Voter Registration in Ogun, Edo, Plateau and Lagos states by two days.
The extensions were announced separately by the Resident Electoral Commissioners in the states.
In Ogun, the state’s REC, Mr. Sam Olumekun, announced the extension in a statement made available to newsmen in Abeokuta.
He said the extension was in view of the challenges encountered during the ongoing exercise in the state.
“The Independent National Electoral Commission wishes to inform the general public that the exercise has been extended by two days. It will now end on Wednesday, November 19, as against Monday, November 17,” Olumekun said.
The REC warned citizens not to engage in multiple registrations, saying doing so amounted to a punishable offence.
In Lagos, the Lagos State REC, Dr. Adekunle Ogunmola, told the News Agency of Nigeria that the extension was to enable the commission to register more eligible voters.
According to him, the exercise, earlier scheduled to end on Monday, will now end on Wednesday.
“We want all eligible voters whose names are not on our Electronic Voters Register to take advantage of that and get registered. But people should avoid multiple or double registration as this will deprive them of voting in future elections,” he said.
Also, INEC has extended the CVR in Plateau State by two days. The exercise, which was scheduled to end on Monday (today) will now end on Wednesday.
The REC in the state, Alhaji Habu Zarma, who announced the extension in Jos on Sunday asked eligible voters to take advantage of the extra two days to have their names captured in the voter register.
Also in Edo State, the REC, Mr. Baritor Kpagih, explained that the decision was taken to create additional opportunity for intending voters in the state to get registered.
Some intending voters in Edo had on Sunday decried the poor conduct of the exercise due to inadequate manpower and data-capturing machines at the designated centres, which had left many of them unregistered.
Also political parties in the state lamented that the registration points were too far from the residents.
They also complained that some of the wards lacked adequate data-capturing machines and staff.
The All Progressives Congress in a statement by the state Publicity Secretary, Mr. Godwin Erhahon, urged the commission to provide a five-day extension and to provide more competent hands.
The Peoples Democratic Party in Edo described the two-day extension as “grossly inadequate” to attend to the high number of eligible residents who were yet to be registered.
The Chairman of PDP in the state, Chief Dan Orbih, explained that reports from the party’s agents showed clearly that the exercise was faced by a lot of challenges.
